Geothermal Drilling
Envirodrilling UK have been drilling in the renewable energy market for a number of years, but have seen an increased demand for geothermal drilling of late.
We are continually expanding our fleet of drilling rigs and have recently taken delivery of our bespoke designed geothermal drilling rig to offer greater flexibility to our customers needs, with a further expansion of a limited access machine later this year.
Closed loop boreholes can be drilled with any of our rigs with depths of a 100m being the normal depth, with single or double loop installations then installed using PE 100 pipe with sizes from 32mm to 40mm diameter. All loops are flow and pressure tested before being sealed with a geothermal grout to ensure the thermal properties of the loop in the borehole and to avoid ground contamination of local water sources. The grout we use is a Thermal Bentonite Grout combined as required with Silica Sands depending on the specification and geological requirements of the ground. This is mixed using our specialised trailer mounted grout mixer and pumped through a tremmie into the borehole to seal the complete borehole from bottom to ground level. Open loop boreholes can be drilled with our larger rigs with borehole sizes and depths being drilled to suit the geothermal requirements of the project. Typical drilling methods we can use are flight augers, air, air/mist, water and drilling muds. We can also offer simultaneous drilling & casing methods down to 90m plus for poor ground conditions with the final borehole finished to 150m plus. Borehole sizes vary from 115mm upwards. This is complemented with our ancillary equipment as required for the complete installation of the works. We also operate pipework teams for the installation of the borehole loops back to the clients' buildings and manifolds ready for connection to the heating system.
